This Coronavirus Is Very Dangerous!

Posted 5 April 2020

Hi everyone. Vic here!

Allow me to shift gears from what I usually post for commentary on an issue that has been affecting all of us.

You may have noticed there were no posts for March. I have a legitimate excuse this time: the Coronavirus pandemic. There is just so much going on with my job and how my life is going that writing posts became an afterthought.

As of writing this, I am feeling fine. Life has been going through numerous changes for me. I am an essential employee at my job so I have to work my regular hours at the office. I’m a church-goer so I’ve been worshipping via a live stream. I stay at home as much as possible. Online courses and a project have been keeping me busy during the weekends.

I even noticed that Nickelodeon is helping its young viewers to get through this madness. This includes hand-washing interstitials, dance-alongs every hour, and even an hour-long kids town hall special where kids could ask their questions and share what they’re doing when staying home. I feel this coverage is a bit much for a kid’s network but even the youngest of TV watchers need to be informed on how to stay healthy during these uncertainties about public health.

I am lucky to even have a job now. If I wasn’t so essential or if I wasn’t working from home, there would be many more posts being written and published. Despite that, I have been posting/retweeting more on Twitter when I find something interesting worth mentioning.

Yes, I am just as tired about hearing about this Coronavirus pandemic as you might be. I’m ready for this to be over. We should still check the news about twice a day to keep up on developing news. So, for right now, stay home as much as possible (but fresh air from your backyard is good, too), spend time with your family, catch up on your passions, and, importantly enough, catch up on some good TV! Please stay healthy and safe, keep your social distance, and stay informed (but not too informed).

Many thanks to the doctors, nurses, and other essential employees who cannot stay home but keep business going to serve us. They deserve a lot of appreciation!

Don’t worry, we’ll get through this!

Nickelodeon Returns to Me!

Posted: 28 February 2020

Note: If I gave the name of the streaming service I use, this post would be an advertisement. I wrote this post for informative reasons, not for profit.

After over 5 years of not having Nickelodeon on any of my channel lineups, I regained access to the main channel in late September. For the time being, a good number of these upcoming posts and reviews will be Nickelodeon (or simply “Nick”)-centered which can help me stay relevant in the ongoings of the animation world of today.

Life Without Cable

I stayed in an apartment with a cable package that eliminated Nick and other Viacom channels from its lineup. I also lived in a household where TV was from an antenna, Netflix, and Hulu (the days before Hulu TV and Youtube TV). It was neat but it got tiring after a while. I was raised as a Nick kid. Seeing how Nick was treating their older properties to movies and reboots made me not want to miss a thing. I even wished and prayed for a Nick OTA (Over The Air) channel. Later on, I found something even better.

Better Than OTA

In the spring of 2019, I knew I was in for something good. I discovered Pluto TV (an awesome cable alternative app). Soon after my discovery, Pluto TV launched its version of a Nick Channel. It’s not the same lineup as the main Nick channel but it’s way better because they show old Nick shows from the ‘90s—my childhood shows! It was sufficient but I wanted to watch new episodes of The Loud House and the then-upcoming The Casagrandes. I was confident that love would find a way.

What A Surprise!

That fall, I Googled streaming services that legally streamed Loud House eps without paying for each episode individually. Not only did I find THE SERVICE that did just that but it also streams live channels included in many cable packages including LIVE NICKELODEON! I signed up the next day so I can have the chance to decide whether this was a wise decision. I got my Loud House and discovered what else this Nick of today had to offer. The package has the main Nick channel AND its premium channels I never had with basic cable (Nicktoons, TeenNick, Nick Jr.). I have no regrets about this decision!

Nickelodeon Isn’t Perfect

Yes, Nick and I had a good break. After seeing all the appealing cartoons they were putting out, I felt it was time to give Nick another try. Sure, they don’t have the best scheduling but it’s a miracle to have the real Nick back. Also, I not only have the main Nick channel but I also have the other Nick channels as well. If I don’t like what’s on the main channel, I can always see what’s on the other Nick channels or find something else to watch that is not Nick-related on other non-Nick-branded channels. This was a luxury I never had using basic cable.

One note about today’s Nick promos

In the Nick promos, they state their advertised times differently than how I remember. In the past, they stated the program’s start time as, for example, “8/7c.” These days, they will simply say the show starts at “8.” I guess they assume each Nick viewer is in the same time zone. If I were younger and tried to watch my show at 8, it would be too late (8:00 to them is 7:00 where I live). That’s something to get used to figuring out when a show starts for my own time zone.

Other Than That…

I like the feel of having Nickelodeon back. Like everything else produced these days, the HD format is a real treat for the eyes though it becomes commonplace after a while. Now I have opportunities to watch all kinds of Spongebob, Fairly OddParents, Loud House, The Casagrandes, It’s Pony, and catch up on my Power Rangers without waiting for the slow Netflix releases. The other Nick channels are a real treat, too. It lets me know there are other viewing options available if I don’t like what main Nick is playing. Nickelodeon isn’t the same as it was in the ‘90s/early ’00s but I’ll take this current one and be open to what else they release.

And don’t worry, I’ll watch other non-Nick animations as well. However, don’t be surprised if I post 3 consecutive Nick-based posts.

My apologies…AGAIN!

Posted: 5 January 2020

I messed up again, didn’t I?

First post for the new year and new decade. Hope your holidays were happy and bright!

Hello again! Sorry for the lack of reviews lately. Yes, I still don’t have that new layout I promised last year. This could take a little bit longer because I want to build my own themes by learning PHP so I’m don’t completely have the hang of that skill yet. I have also been taking on other real-life projects so that takes time from sitting down to write the reviews.

On a more positive note, this week I will post a review about the Spongebob Musical. It was quite interesting. I have also been posting more on Twitter so go check out those tweets.

More post and reviews coming soon. In the meantime, please check the Twitter page, @vicsreview, for more posts and updates. You’ll hear from me soon!

My Apologies

Posted 2 August 2019

OMG, VIC, WHERE THE HECK HAVE YOU BEEN?

Hey, everyone! It’s me, Vic.

OK, you may be asking why I haven’t posted anything in 2 months. Here are My excuses:

The Planet Sheen Review

I wasn’t sure what to think when I completed watching Planet Sheen back in late May. I took notes for the duration of my viewing. It was just that I felt the show was uhhh…I don’t know. It was difficult to form an opinion so I had to do some thinking. How can I write this review? In what light should I write this? I’ve started putting pencil to paper (or keystrokes to Google Docs in this case) early in June but something else came up…

The Funk

Yes, I was in quite a funk for two months. This started around the time I started the Planet Sheen review. I was always tired after work and I had no desire to write anything. All I wanted to do was watch my shows then take a nap. When I wake from the nap it would be time to go to bed. Even so, review writing would not be on the schedule. I would re-post on Twitter but it still wasn’t good enough. You want original content from me, right? I’m feeling OK now. I need to get this taken care of.

Since the last review, I have watched several other animations that will be reviewed. I am now behind on them and will need to catch up (first being the Planet Sheen review). The Planet Sheen review will be posted in a day or two.

Hopefully posting this post should motivate me to get these reviews written. I understand sometimes we need a break but I didn’t want to go this long. OK, back to writing…

Stay tuned for more!

In-Flight Entertainment: Watching Cable TV in the Sky

Posted 28 February 2019

This was six months ago but why not tell about this now? It’s the shows I sampled I want to talk about.

Back in August, I took a plane ride that offered in-flight cable. I don’t watch cable at home so I thought I’d spend a few dollars on the cable that the airline offered. They offered a few channels of recent movies. The advertising was so convincing and I didn’t want to be starving myself of entertainment like the previous plane rides of the past couple years. The channels I focused on were the following: Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Nickelodeon, and Nicktoons.

My memory of what I watched and when I watched them is a bit fuzzy. I’m just going to talk about what I watched and what I thought of it. I sampled a few of the aforementioned network’s current fares and here is my adventure…

I started my journey by watching Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One.” It was OK. Just OK. I was ready to get to the cartoons after I finished the movie.

A word about Teen Titans/Teen Titans Go

I watched some Teen Titans Go on Cartoon Network. Not as magical as its predecessor. I like the 2003 Teen Titans because despite the dark tone, it is much more mellower.  It is like the Titans are a team of superheroes. This is from watching a few episodes when it was new. “Go,” on the other hand, mmm…it seems Cartoon Network attempted a reboot and failed. I’m sure original Teen Titans fans were thrilled to see what could be a reboot or continuation of the original stories but what do they really get? Something reeeally cartoony. Instead of fighting crime, their battles are nothing but a party. People wanted more Teen Titans but who asked for a version like this?

Moving On…

Then Ben 10 (most likely the latest series) came on until it was time for more TTG. Though I’ve never watched the show until then, seeing the longevity of the franchise, I feel there is potential for me to have some appreciation for the series if I have a look at the others series proceeding this current one. Probably something I might try someday with available versions of the show.

Eventually Unikitty came on. I had no idea what Unikitty was until I watched a few segments. I saw the Lego logo at the beginning and thought, Oh ok, a Lego character. I still think Lego is cool despite whatever age I am. I still need to watch the Lego movies. Similar tone to Teen Titans Go, kind of hyperactive but how can you not love a creature that’s both a cat and a unicorn at the same time? However, Master Frown (a villain) can be a bit of a you-know-what. I heard what discouraging thing he told Puppycorn at his birthday party about getting older. Luckily, Unikitty *politely* asked him to leave. Seems like a cute cartoon to watch if/when I want.

I eventually jumped over to Nickelodeon and Breadwinners was on. I understand that this show originated as a YouTube video and Nick later gave it the green light for a show. Why? I’ve been trying to find a reason to like this show but I seem to have trouble. Even most of the reviews on the internet are bad. I remember a time when Nickelodeon had better standards for their shows. I’ll let you know when I get around to enjoying it but until then…This show has been just difficult to watch and is not always funny. It’s like lately the more I watch and the more I research about the show, the more I appreciate it. Let’s move on…

Flying Home

From what I remembered on the plane ride back, I watched a few segments of Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears. It was just OK. The bears are cute. I remember one of the episodes I watched was when the baby bears get used as prizes at a fair. A game owner rigs the game so the bears can’t leave (again, my memory’s fuzzy).

Later on, I couldn’t take all this hyperness so I switch to Boomerang and watch a bit of Tom and Jerry. Ah, yes, you can’t beat these classics! I never had Boomerang in any cable package I had. I just wanted to see what was what even in this current era of the channel. I watched a few of these until I switched over to Nicktoons.

Right before the airplane touched down at the airport, I decided to end the plane trip with one of my classics, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. It was a season one episode set I remember fondly: “Raise the Oozy Scab/I Dream of Jimmy.” Anything Jimmy Neutron – always welcomed with me :). I watched until it was time to get off the plane or whenever they turned off the screens.

A Great Alternative to Pass the Time

I like how commercial airplanes these days have TVs built in the back of the headrest of the person in front of you. This is an interesting idea even riding in coach. I’d say on my trip 6 months ago, buying the TV package was really worth the time and money. I was able to watch the channels I wanted (I really just watched these shows I haven’t seen so I can tell you about them). It was quite an experience to see what live Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang are like these days. Most of what I watch these days I stream through a streaming service or I buy the episodes through YouTube. I will very likely do this again on my next plane trip and I will tell you about that experience.

Happy New Year — 2019

Posted 17 January 2019

Hello and welcome to the new year. I hope you had fun ringing in 2019. Or did you sleep through it? No matter what you did at that time, I have many reviews I plan to write for this coming year. I will post them as soon as they are written which may take some time.

The Old Vic’s Review’s New Look

If you’ve been on the old Vic’s Review blog recently, you may have noticed its new, modern look. You may be wondering why I decided to give the old site a hot, new makeover and not this one. The reason why VR1 got the first makeover was so that whoever found the blog on their phone or other small-screened device can read the blog more easily. The previous theme was old, outdated, and was not responsive to other device screens.

Blogger has some awesome new themes that look excellent on such an old blog. Unfortunately I can’t decide on a fresh look for this blog. It’s hard to find a good theme on WordPress for a blog with not many pictures. I want this blog to look just as modern, if not more modern, than its predecessor. I shall make it so even if I have to build a hip theme myself with code.

Yes, 2019 will be the ultimate year for new reviews and gradual improvements for this new blog itself. Hopefully I can post more than I did last year. Remember the look of this blog now for around this time next year, it will look better and more modern.

Now, on with the reviews…

How did I get to watch the movie Flushed Away on a weeknight?

Posted 16 July 2018

…Because I can! If you like Aardman animation and British humor, you should definitely give this 2006 movie a try.

Some things:

You may notice I haven’t been putting pictures with my posts. Yes, it seems easy to go on Google and steal other people’s pictures and post on here with my posts. On the other hand, I have absolutely no time and money to get in trouble and pay hefty fines. I have plans for my future that don’t include those. I could make pictures but I have yet to figure out how I’m going to do it. Yeah, I figure out how to dress up my blog posts when I can.

Also, I am in the process of writing a post about a show I am currently watching. The post will come up soon.

Stay cool, everyone!
